If you’re looking to find the best red dot under 200 dollars for your AR-15, I highly recommend you consider the Holosun HS403b.
It’ s hands down one of the top red dot sights under 200 bucks on the market today…
And in this review, I’m going to discuss some of the most important features you get when you purchase this optic.
So, let’s jump into the review!
The HS403B Has Outstanding Battery Life…
Holosun is starting to make a name for themselves because people are beginning to take notice of the fact…
…that they make quality red dot sights that are priced affordably.
The Holosun HS403B definitely fits that description…
…and one of the features I love most about this sight is that it has long-lasting battery life.
Holosun says that one battery (CR2032) can last in the 403b for 50,000 hours, which is about 5 years long.
Now, I’m not a big fan of red dots that don’t have ultra long battery life because I’ve simply had them die on me at times that were inconvenient in the past.
And it really doesn’t make much sense to me to buy a red dot with mediocre battery life, when I can go ahead and get the HS403b for basically the same price.
So for me, the 50,000 hours of battery life is a big deal and an absolute necessity on any new red dot I plan on buying.
The 403B Is Fairly Robust…
Another thing I love about this Holosun is that it’s dustproof and waterproof.
You can actually keep this sight one meter under water for 30 minutes, and it’s going to hold up just fine.
Now, being a civilian gun owner and not a navy seal…
…I’m ok if my sight isn’t submersible at 80 feet under water like some higher priced red dots.
All I really want is a sight that can handle the rain and snow coming down on a bad day or handle a trek through some wet terrain where it might end up being splashed with water…
And the Holosun HS403b is strong enough to handle any of those conditions with ease.
Battery Changes Are Improved Over the 403A…
So, Holosun 403a vs 403b… A lot of shooters wonder what the difference is.
Well, the big difference is how the batteries are changed.
You see, with the Holosun HS403A, you have to entirely dismount the optic to replace the battery.
To me, this is an extremely undesirable design feature because it means you will have to re-zero your red dot everytime you change the battery.
On the other hand with the 403b, you don’t have to go through that hassle.
There’s a small battery tray on the side of the sight that you simply take out to replace the battery without removing the entire optic.
Now, it does require that you remove two pretty small screws, and Holosun includes a small tool to enable you to do that.
But the truth is even though the tool works, it’ll end up being much easier if you have a small screwdriver like those used to replace screws on eyeglasses.
And again, the major benefit here is that you won’t have to dismount the optic to replace the battery and then have to go through the hassle of re-zeroing your sight.
The Reticle Is Clear And Just The Right Size…
The lens on the 403b is extremely clear as opposed to some other sight’s that add a greenish tint to everything you see while looking through them.
And the reticle is a crisp 2 MOA dot. Now, while this is not my favorite style of reticle on a red dot…
Check out my review of the Holosun HS503C to find out which one is…
…it is a very practical reticle.
The reason why is because at 2 MOA the dot is big enough that your eye can quickly catch it when you present the rifle…
But at the same time, it’s still small enough that you can aim precisely at smaller targets in the distance.
You see aiming precisely becomes a bit of a challenge when the dot is a 4, 6 or even larger MOA size.
So, I always prefer smaller MOA reticles, and I don’t really have much interest in anything larger than 3 MOA.
The Sight Comes With Two Mounts…
Here’s the deal, I don’t like spending extra money if I don’t have to. So, another reason I really like this red dot is that it comes with 2 mounts.
Now, the HS403b comes attached to a lower 1/3 co-witness mount, which is perfect for mounting it on an AR 15.
But it also comes with a low mount, which means you can easily mount it on a shotgun, an AK, a 10/22, or any number of other firearms platforms.
Both mounts work really well, and all you have to do to swap between them is pop out four screws on the base of the sight housing.
It’s really easy, and I was able to switch from the high mount to the low mount in just a matter of minutes.
In The End, The Holosun HS403B Pros…
- 50,000 hours of battery life
- Waterproof and Dustproof
- Clear lens
- 2 MOA dot reticle
- Battery Tray is accessible
- Includes 2 mounts
- The battery tray uses small screws that are difficult to screw in or out with the included tool (but if you have a small screwdriver this is a non-issue).
Final Verdict: Is the Holosun HS403B worth buying?
Again it has outstanding battery life…
it’s durable and waterproof…
…and it comes with 2 versatile mounts!
To me, it is without a doubt one of the top red dot sights under 200 dollars…
…and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a high-quality budget optic.
Final Rating: 4 out 5 Stars
Farewell, and have fun at the range!
