First, Check Out This Review Video!
I’m not just about red dots you know…
Sometimes you need to reach out a little farther with your rifle, and when that’s the case you need to be running a scope…
If you’re running a scope, that means you also need a mount…
…and today I’m going to tell you about what I think is the best AR 15 scope mount on the market.
It’s the Aero Precision Ultralight Scope Mount and in the review, I’m going to answer the following questions:
- Is it really ultralight?
- Is it a durable mount?
- Is it affordable?
So let’s just into it and start answering these questions.
Does It Deserve The Name Ultralight?
The Aero Precision ultralight mount is incredibly lightweight.
If you look up the weight according to the Aero Precision website it’s only 3.27 ounces!
That’s an insane weight to me, and I think it’s really exciting… The reason why is because I’m always trying to keep the weight down on my rifles.
When you add a scope to your rifle, it’s really easy to start increasing the overall weight of the gun significantly.
It only makes sense right? I mean, you have the weight of the scope, which includes glass and, depending on the brand, could be built like a tank.
But you also need to worry about the weight your mount will add in addition to your scope.
It can really change how heavy your rifle feels.
For example, I did a comparison using the same rifle and scope combination using 2 different mounts:
- The Aero Precision Ultralight Mount
- The Primary Arms Mount
As mentioned before, the Aero Precision mount weighs 3.2 ounces, and the Primary Arms mount weighs 8 ounces.
Like I said, I mounted the same scope (the Primary Arms 1-6 ACSS Reticle Scope) on the same AR-15 and just swapped out the two mounts.
What I found out was that a few extra ounces on the mount made a huge difference in the overall feel of my rifle.
The same setup using the Aero Precision mount was noticeably much lighter…
…and to be honest, it was really surprising to me just how much lighter it felt.
So I really believe this scope mount earns its name ‘ultralight’ because the effect it had lightening up my rifle was really impressive.
Is It A Durable Scope Mount?
The ultralight mount is also pretty strong. First of all, it attaches to your rifle easily and securely.
You simply line it up on your rifle’s top rail and tighten down 3 screws using an Allen wrench that you get included with the scope mount.
I highly recommend you use some type of threadlocker when tightening down the screws.
The reason why is that your rifle will vibrate when you fire rounds from it, and the vibrations usually have the effect of loosening screws.
Using threadlocker on your screws totally eliminates that problem, and I recommend using it for all accessories you add to your rifle.
I also really like the design and look of the ultralight mount.
It’s minimal, which probably helps it keep the weight down, and it doesn’t have any large nuts or knobs sticking out on the side of it.
It also just looks incredibly sleek. Now, I’ve had mine mounted on one of my AR-15s for about two years now, and…
- I’ve never noticed any loosening
- It’s never lost zero
- And it’s never given me any indication that it’s going to crack or fail
Keep in mind, this is all through just normal use, and while I don’t baby my guns, I also don’t swing them around hitting things like they are baseball bats.
In other words, I’ve never done some crazy torture test of this mount haha.
How Much Will It Cost You?
The Aero Precision ultralight mount is fairly affordable.
First of all, there are many scope mounts that are cheaper than the ultralight.
For example, you can find tons of $20 mounts on Amazon right now…
…but the problem with these cheap Chinese-produced mounts is that they will often break easily or not properly hold zero on your rifle.
So even though you think you’re saving a few bucks by purchasing one, they end up just being a waste of money.
Contrary to that, there are some extremely expensive scope mounts out on the market too.
I personally think it’s crazy to spend $200 on a scope mount, but if that’s how you want to spend your money, go right ahead.
So that brings us to Aero Precision ultralight mount, which usually falls somewhere within the 60 to 70 dollar range…
…and the truth is, that’s pretty much the minimum you’re going to have to pay to get a scope mount that’s durable and reliably holds zero.
There are many other scope mounts that are around the same price as the Aero Precision ultralight.
In fact, I mentioned the Primary Arms mount earlier…
…but they weigh twice as much as the ultralight, and they often have big bulky nuts or knobs on the side where you have to tighten them down.
So really, the Aero Precision scope mount gives you a lot more value for your money because it is super lightweight and very minimal in its design.
Aero Precision Ultralight Scope Mount Review – Conclusions…
In the end, I think the Aero Precision Ultralight Scope Mount is the best AR 15 scope mount on the market because:
- It’s ultra lightweight
- It holds zero
- It’s very durable
It also won’t cost you an arm and a leg, and comes in both a 30mm version and a 1-inch version depending on the size of the scope you’re running!
