I’ve got to be honest in this review…
Most of my pistols are polymer… but I’ve got a few that harken back to the days when guns were made completely of steel.
And one of my absolute favorites in that category is the SP-01 Tactical…
I love this pistol, and in this article, I want to go through the things that make it such a fantastic handgun… so let’s jump into the CZ SP 01 Review.
Ergonomics Of The CZ SP 01…
I want to start by talking about the ergos of this pistol.
First of all, this pistol feels absolutely wonderful when you hold it. It really feels like it was molded for my hand when I pick it up.
I don’t exactly know how CZ achieved this because the grip doesn’t look that much different from my other handguns…
…but it really just fits my hand like a glove and the included CZ SP 01 grips are a super comfortable rubber.
Aside from that, the mag release is easy to engage, and even though the slide release is a little bit far away from my dominant hand’s thumb…
…it’s still easily accessed by my other hand, and I found that reloads can be done very quickly.
How Well Does It Shoot…
Another thing I really love about this pistol is the weight.
This is an all steel pistol. So it is heavy especially compared to most of the polymer pistols you find out there today.
But depending on your use, I think that weight is an advantage because it really makes this gun pleasant to shoot.
I have shot this gun side-by-side my Glocks and M&ps, and the weight of the steel frame just soaks up the recoil and keeps you on target.
Aside from the weight, the SP-01 is also a full-size handgun. That means the sight radius is relatively long and will be helpful as you take aim.
You can also get a very high grip on this gun (which translates to better recoil management) because it has that classic CZ 75 design with the internal slide rails.
The trigger on the SP 01 is also pretty good. It’s not the greatest trigger I’ve ever used, but the double action is relatively smooth and the single action breaks nicely.
All in all, this gun is really easy and pleasant to shoot, and I’ve never had a malfunction with it which tells me that it’s reliable.
Design Characteristics Of The SP 01…
As for the design of this pistol, it is a 9 mm which is always my preference for a handgun caliber, and the CZ 75 SP-01 magazine capacity is 18 rounds.
Additionally, you can get the SP 01 in two variations:
- With a safety
- With a decocker
I chose to get the model with a safety because I’ve heard that it makes gunsmithing the trigger a little easier (something I may have done in the future)…
But I think either model will get the job done, and it’s really a matter of personal preference which one you choose.
Another feature on the SP 01 that I think is a big upgrade over the classic CZ 75, is the addition of a light rail.
To me the light rail is important for two reasons:
- It allows you to mount a weapon light which is important for home defense.
- It weighs down the gun near the muzzle, helping the gun shoot flatter.
Field stripping…
Field stripping the CZ SP 01 is a little more complicated than most other modern handguns…
…but it’s really not too bad once you’ve done it a couple of times. You simply:
- Pull back the slide slightly.
- Take out the slide release.
- Remove the slide from the frame.
- Take out your recoil spring.
- Remove your barrel from the slide.
Again it’s a simple process and it shouldn’t be something that discourages anyone from getting this gun.
Criticisms Of This Pistol…
I only have three criticisms of the CZ SP 01 (and they’re both relatively minor):
- The weight is a problem if you intend to carry this gun either concealed or out in the open (It’s a benefit if you use it for home defense, competition, or for fun on the range).
- As mentioned before, it doesn’t field-strip as easily as many other modern pistols do.
- It’s not optics ready. These days I’m probably going to put a red dot on most handguns that I own…
CZ 75 SP-01 Price…
The price of the SP 01 is really impressive in my opinion. I don’t want to get specific because prices are changing all the time…
…but you will usually find it for a couple hundred dollars less than its steel-framed competitors.
CZ75 SP01 Review – Conclusion…
In conclusion, I think the CZ SP 01 Tactical is a fantastic handgun because:
- It’s reliable
- Is It has great orconomics
- It soaks up recoil
- It’s easy to shoot
