First, Watch This Video:
I hate A2 style pistol grips on AR-15s…
Ok, maybe hate is a strong word, but I really don’t like them…
They’re thin. They’ve got a finger ledge that hits me in the wrong spot. And they’re just flat-out uncomfortable.
Luckily they’re pretty easy to replace…
There are tons of options out on the market right now, and a lot of these aftermarket grips are a huge upgrade over the standard grip.
I do have a favorite though…
And in this Magpul MOE Plus Grip review, I’m going to discuss why I think this grip sits above the rest in terms of:
- Ergonomics
- Additional Features
- Affordability
So with all that said, let’s get into it!
Ergonomics Of The Magpul MOE Plus…
I love the ergonomics of the MOE Plus grip…
As I mentioned before, I find the standard A2 style grips that you usually find on AR-15s to be very thin.
My hands are a size large when I wear gloves, and my fingers just seem to rap too far around A2 style grips.
I don’t have that problem with the MOE + because it’s got a fairly wide body that just feels more filling in my hand.
Another problem I have with the standard A2 style grip is the little nub or finger ledge that sits on the front.
It seems that whenever I shoot a rifle with the A2 grip, that finger ledge hits me right in the middle of my finger rather than in between my fingers like it’s supposed to do.
This makes me constantly fumble around with my grip, and even though I can shoot with the finger ledge…
…it just gets really annoying having it there getting in the way.
With the MOE Plus I don’t have to worry about any finger ledge, and I really prefer just having a flat surface on the front of my grip.
Another feature of the MOE Plus that stands out to me is the beavertail on the back of the grip.
I shoot pistols and AR-15 with a very high grip because I feel like it allows me to control the gun more forcefully…
…and having that extra beavertail makes my high grip feel really solid.
Additional Features Of This Grip…
The MOE Plus grip has a couple of really cool features…
First of all, it has a rubber overmolding…
I love the rubber overmolding because it feels extremely comfortable and really allows me in a lock onto the grip.
In addition to that, the grip doesn’t feel freezing cold when you’re at the range in winter…
…and it doesn’t get insanely hot if your rifle has been sitting in the summer sun.
The rubber overmolding is actually the main difference between the Magpul MOE Plus grip and the standard MOE grip.
And even though I do like the standard MOE grip, that rubber overmolding on the Plus just feels so much better in my opinion.
Another cool feature on the MOE Plus is the trapdoor that opens from the bottom of the grip.
Now to be fair, many grips offer this feature, but it is nice to have especially if you’re running a battery-powered optic on your rifle.
The reason why is because you can easily store an extra battery in your grip by placing it in a plastic bag and slipping it through the trapdoor.
It doesn’t add much extra weight to your rifle, and it keeps that extra battery handy just in case the battery on your red dot goes out.
By the way, you should be running a red dot with extra long battery life, but anything can fail, and it’s nice to have that back up battery option.
Affordability Of The MOE Plus…
Some grips out there cost a lot of money, but I’m happy to say that the MOE Plus is very affordable.
You can usually find it for a little bit over 20 bucks, and I really like that it comes in some really cool colors as well:
- FDE
- Black
- Gray
- OD Green
I like adding accessories that add a little bit of color and character to my rifles…
…but I know that some guys out there are pretty happy sticking with the standard black.
Magpul MOE Plus Grip Conclusions…
In the end, I think the MOE Plus is an amazing grip because it:
- Feels great in the hand
- Has extra utility with the trapdoor
- Is very affordable
And the fact that you can replace your A2 style grip for around 20 bucks, to me makes the MOE Plus a no-brainer when outfitting your AR-15.
