If you’re on the lookout for the best red dot sight under 200 dollars…
I highly recommend you take a look at the Holosun HS403b.
It is, without question, one of the top red dot sights on the market today, even at its budget price point…
And in this review, I’m going to share with you some of the striking features this bold little red dot has to offer.
So with that said, let’s jump into it!
Holosun HS403B Battery Life…
Holosun is starting to make a name for themselves because people are beginning to realize…
…that they make high-quality red dot sights that are priced affordably.
I think the Holosun HS403B definitely fits that description…
…and one of the features I love most about this sight is the long-lasting battery life.
Holosun says that one CR 2032 battery can last in the 403b for 50,000 hours, which is about 5 years long!
If you’ve read any of my other red dot sight reviews, you’ll know that this is a big sticking point for me…
Red dots with short battery life simply don’t excite me because I’ve had some of them die on me in the past at times that were inconvenient.
So for me, the 50,000 hours of battery life is a huge deal, and it’s exactly what I’m looking for when I’m considering a new red dot sight.
The 403B Is Robust…
Another thing I love about this Holosun is that it’s dustproof and waterproof.
You can actually keep this sight one meter under water for 30 minutes, and it’ll hold up just fine.
Now, being a civilian gun owner rather than a hardcore navy seal…
…I’m ok if my sight isn’t submersible at 80 feet under water like some higher priced red dots.
All I really want is a sight that can handle the rain and snow without any issues whatsoever…
…or handle a trek through wet terrain where it might end up being splashed or falling into the water.
And the Holosun HS403b is strong enough to handle all of those conditions without any problems.
Battery Changes Are Improved Over the 403A…
So, Holosun 403a vs 403b… A lot of shooters wonder what the difference is.
Well, the big difference is how the batteries are changed.
You see, with the Holosun HS403A, you have to entirely dismount the optic to replace the battery.
To me, that’s an unacceptable design feature because it means you’ll have to re-zero your red dot everytime you change the battery.
On the other hand with the 403b, you don’t have any of that hassle…
There’s a small battery tray on the side of the sight that you simply pull out to replace the battery without dismounting the entire optic. (Great job Holosun for improving this!)
Now, it does require that you remove two pretty tiny screws, and Holosun includes a small tool that enables you to do that.
But the truth is even though the tool works, it’ll end up being much easier if you have a small screwdriver like those used to replace screws on eyeglasses.
And again, the major benefit here is that you won’t have to dismount the optic to replace the battery and then have to go through the hassle of re-zeroing your sight.
The Holosun HS403B Reticle Is Clear And Just The Right Size…
The lens on the 403b is extremely clear…
You see, with some other sights you get a greenish tint covering everything in your sight picture.
But when I look through my hs403b, I don’t get any off-color hue, and I’m able to see everything very clearly.
In addition to that, the reticle is a crisp 2 MOA dot…
I like a simple 2 MOA dot reticle on my red dot sights.
The reason why is because at 2 MOA the dot is big enough that your eye can quickly catch it when you present your rifle…
But at the same time, it’s still small enough that you can aim precisely at targets in the distance.
You see, aiming precisely becomes a bit of a challenge when the dot is a 4, 6 or even larger MOA size.
So, I always prefer smaller MOA reticles, and at 2 MOA, the reticle on the 403b is, in my opinion, the perfect size.
You Get 2 Mounts Included With This Sight…
Here’s the deal, I don’t like spending extra money if I don’t have to. So, another reason I really like this red dot is that it comes with 2 mounts.
Now, the HS403b ships attached to a lower 1/3 co-witness mount, which is perfect for mounting it on an AR 15 with back up iron sights.
But it also comes with a low mount, which means you can easily mount it on a shotgun, an AK, a 10/22, or any number of other firearms platforms.
Both mounts work really well, and all you have to do to swap between them is pop out four screws on the base of the sight housing.
It’s really easy to do, and I was able to switch from my high mount to the low mount in just a matter of minutes.
In The End, The Holosun HS403B Pros…
- 50,000 hours of battery life
- Waterproof and Dustproof
- Clear lens and sight picture
- 2 MOA dot reticle
- Battery Tray is accessible
- Includes 2 mounts
The Cons…
- The battery tray uses small screws that are difficult to screw in or out with the included tool (but if you have a small screwdriver this is a non-issue)
